The mission of Deaf Family Literacy Memphis is to see deaf and hard of hearing children
enjoy success in life through empowering families with resources,
services and support.
Literacy Memphis program is based on Gallaudet University's Shared
Reading Program with the addition of parent education. The program
employs deaf mentors who conduct weekly visits in a family’s home to
teach parents (and other family members) how to read to their child
using American Sign Language. Lessons include shared reading time, and an activity to
reinforce the book.
